I'm going to just go ahead and say what we all already know:
No one has a lot of hope that the new D&D movie is going to be what we in the business call "good."
And that is sad. It is sad because it means that we have suffered through crappy ones in the past - I will never get the vision of Jeremy Irons trying to give life to that movie with a look on his face that just said "Why am I here?" - both of the animated and live action variety, and nothing we have ever seen has in any way prepared us for the idea that it could be good.
Frankly, the best "D&D" movies that have been produced have had nothing to do with the actual role-playing game and were just thematically appropriate and awesome. In the age of crowdfunding and fan films, there have been numerous awesome ones about role-playing, LARPing, the players themselves, and even the stories that have come from them. Some of them are straight up brilliant.
But we don't have a lot of confidence do we?
I mean, I have to admit to skepticism when they announced 5th Edition as well though, and I think they knocked that out of the park, and I had my misgivings for much the same reason. I was underwhelmed by 4th Edition.
And now with some talk that it will be a cross between Tolkien and Guardians of the Galaxy? I don't know, could be awesome, could be terrible.
But maybe I'm wrong. How about you? Are you interested or terrified at the prospect of this new movie?
I am become death, destroyer of worlds.
